CDC Welcomes President Biden at Coal-to-Wind Redevelopment Project

July 20, 2022: President Joe Biden visits Brayton Point Commerce Center to announce new climate change measures. The Biden administration chose to feature Brayton Point as a renewable energy success story – once the largest coal-fired power plant in New England is now an offshore wind energy manufacturing and logistics hub.

Somerset, MA – On July 20, 2022, Commercial Development Company, Inc. (CDC) was honored to host President Biden at our Brayton Point redevelopment project in south Massachusetts. During the visit, President Biden highlighted the use of legacy energy assets to propel the transition to renewables.

Today, Brayton Point is on the frontier of clean energy in America. On this site they will manufacture 248 miles of high-tech, heavy-duty cables. These specialized subsea cables are necessary to tie offshore wind farms to the existing grid. Manufacturing these cables will mean good paying jobs for 250 workers. As many as the old power plant had at its peak. And the port, 34-ft deep was used to carry coal to the power plant. Now we’re going to use that same port to carry components for wind power into the sea. The converter station here and the substations nearby are the assets that move energy across the power line. They will now move clean electricity generated offshore by the wind. Enough to power hundreds of thousands of households. Putting old assets to work to deliver clean energy. -- President Joe Biden

In 2018, CDC/ELT acquired Brayton Point and set a goal to transform the retired power plant into a logistics and manufacturing hub for offshore wind energy. We are happy to report overwhelming success in that endeavor. Today, the property is the future home to a subsea cable manufacturing plant (Prysmian Group) and an electric converter station (Mayflower Wind) which will bring renewable energy directly to the local grid.
